The exhibition of caricatures by Ito Korjenić "Let's Get Serious" will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Queen Katarina Kosača Gallery in the Croatian House of Herceg Stjepan Kosača, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Author Ito Korjenić will present himself with around fifty works on the topic of current social phenomena.
"Although this exhibition was organized to mark the 60th anniversary (1965-2025) of the active creation of cartoons as a specific journalistic genre, the author has no ambition for it to take on the character of a retrospective, but it nevertheless represents its integral part and is thematically focused on current and relevant content."
In his caricatures we recognize social, political or moral criticism directed at individuals. Sometimes they contain mockery and even accusation, which makes them a positive corrective, either for the individual or for society. However, his caricatures, as polyvalent contents, also carry an entertaining illustrative tone. They purposefully create a humorous or satirical depiction with the aim of sending a message or commenting on a phenomenon.
It should be emphasized that, as with many of the greats of Mostar, especially in the field of fine arts, which is also true for Ita Korjenić, there is a rather deep gap between their real value and the assessment of their environment. This fate, although negative, can still inspire even greater creative endeavors. " (Zlatko Serdarević)
Ito Korjenić was born in Mostar in 1943. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University "Džemal Bijedić" in Mostar. Professionally, he worked as a development manager in the Work Organization Production of Trade Equipment Soko Mostar.
He published his first cartoons in the Mostar newspapers Sloboda, Hit, Soko, and from 1965 he began collaborating with print media outside Mostar, first in Sarajevo's Oslobođenje. The number of newspapers and magazines in which his cartoons enriched their content is impressive. Ita's anti-war caricature is on the cover of the book Warikatura croatica from 1999, which features the works of world-famous caricaturists.
He has published two publications – one with anti-war cartoons (1993), and the other, an autobiographical novel, in 2019. He has organized a series of solo and several group exhibitions in Mostar, Italy, and Australia (Sydney).
He won third prize in Novi Sad in 1970, two awards in Italy in 1988 and 1990, and his caricature was declared the best caricature of the week in the Sydney newspaper Lider. His works have been included in numerous caricature catalogues in the country and abroad.
He lives in Sydney, but travels very often between Mostar - Sydney - Mostar.
