The institution Hrvatski dom Herceg Stjepan Kosač, as the legal successor of the former House of Culture, was founded as a public company in 1994, by the Decision on the establishment of the Public Company Hrvatski dom Herceg Stjepan Kosač, of the Mostar Municipal Council, and existed as such until 2002, when the Decisions on taking over the founding rights and obligations of the municipal councils of the South, Southwest and West city municipalities, re-registers the former public company into an institution.
The City Council of the City of Mostar, at its session held on June 23, 2004, passed a Decision on taking over the founding, ownership and other rights and obligations of the Croatian Home of Herceg Stjepan Kosač Mostar, which still exists today.

Various cultural and entertainment events are held in the Croatian Home, there is a coffee bar inside the building, and in front of the building there is a monument to the fallen Croatian defenders.
The building of the Croatian House of Herceg Stjepan Kosač was previously called the House of Culture.
Work on the building itself began in 1959 on land that was taken from the Mostar-Duvanj diocese without compensation. The building material that was prepared for the construction of the cathedral church was used in the construction. Engineer Reuf Kadić from Sarajevo was the designer of the construction of the building. The first wing of the building was built in July 1959.
The second wing was built in September 1959. The entire building was completed in 1960.
The changes and corrections to the building were made by the architect Romeo Tiberio and engineer Izudin Mahmutspahić, who was also the supervisory body in the construction, otherwise a lieutenant colonel of the JNA.
