Cultural institutions in Mostar

14 cultural institutions operate in Mostar:

Archives of Herzegovina, National Library of the Croatian Academy of Sciences, Library-children's section, Museum of Herzegovina, Symphony Orchestra, Pavarotti Music Center, National Theatre, Croatian National Theatre, Puppet Theatre, Puppet Theater, Cultural Center, Croatian Home Herceg Stjepan Kosača, Home of Culture Blagaj i Kulturni Center Potoci.

Librarian activity takes place in three well-positioned buildings in the city, and one of the buildings is intended exclusively for younger ages, from preschool to high school.
The Museum of Herzegovina has 3 collections, archaeological, ethnographic and literary. It operates in four facilities located in the Old Bridge area: the central facility with archeology and ethnography, the Stari Most Museum, dedicated to the construction and restoration of the bridge,
Interpretation museum MUM, Memorial house of Alekse Šantić, one of the most important poets from Mostar.
Musical activities take place through the activities of the Symphony Orchestra and the Pavarotti Music Center, which, in addition to music therapy workshops, also has a recording studio and the Mostar Rock School is located there. This activity
it was completed by the existence of two music schools I. and II. degree, and studied music at the University of Mostar.
Mostar has four theater houses, two puppet theaters and two drama theaters. Each theater has its own stage, with 536 seats in drama theaters and 310 seats in puppet theaters.

Four cultural centers are very well positioned in the city area, two in the center of the city and two in the peripheral areas in the north and south. Suburban culture centers are intended to meet the cultural needs of those parts of the city, from education, folklore, social games, to public entertainment. The culture center, located next to the Old Town itself, surrounded by a park of stećaks from Herzegovina, has gallery, dance, presentation activities, a local radio station, as well as the HSK Croatian Home, whose gallery is organized as a separate unit within
center, with its own collection and regular exhibition activity.

In the same location, there is also a smaller gallery space that is used by the Society of Croatian Fine Artists in
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These institutions realize around 900 programs annually, not including the regular activities of archives, museums and libraries.
The largest number of mentioned institutions was created in the 1950s and developed until the 1992-95 war. year. After 1995, the buildings of the Pavarotti Music Center, the Culture Center, the Croatian National Theater, the Puppet Theater, the Stari Most Museum and the MUM Interpretation Museum and one library building were built.
Two public higher education institutions operate in Mostar, with the Academy of Fine Arts and the Studio of Music, as well as two private higher education institutions.
The cultural scene for young people is organized through several associations, the most prominent being the Abrašević Youth Cultural Center with its open scene for alternative and urban culture.
The Hub of Fine Arts Gallery was opened in Mostar in 2022, where a collection of prominent world artists of the first half of the 20th century is exhibited, so in Mostar it is also possible to see the works of Edgar Degas, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse, Tamara Lempick...

More than 30 cultural societies dedicated to traditional, dance, music, literature, art and architecture activities operate in the city, as well as three professional associations - art historians, fine artists and writers, which are of a regional character. The national cultural societies of Croats /Matica hrvatska i Napredak/, Bosniaks /Preporod/, Serbs /Prosvjeta/ are an important factor in the general cultural picture of the city, as well as the existence of the French and Turkish cultural centers and the American corner.

The most important events are: the regional Comedy Theater Festival Mostar Liska, the international Mostar Blues&Rock Festival, the regional Šantić Poetry Evenings and the Šantić Festival of Children of Poets, the international festival Mostar Spring - Days of the Croatian Mother, the international festival Mostar summer, the international Street Art Festival, the regional literary festival Poligon, regional Mostar Summer Fest, regional Film Days, Advent manifestation in Mostar...

Some of these events have a tradition longer than 40 years.
The City of Mostar annually allocates about 51 TP3T from its Budget for the needs of culture, from this money the work of institutions and part of the program content of institutions and associations in the field of culture is financed.
